The Number One Reason Why Interviews Are Lost & What to do about that?

A lot of people have asked me a question, a silly question that I've politely avoided answering. "Which spoken English institute did you attend while you were a kid?" Probably it's now time to respond!

Anyone who's attempting to search jobs knows that there's minimum three parameters that are considered to qualify an applicant into a prospective employee.

  1. Communication
  2. Technical
  3. Profile & Skillset
And in that order many applicants lose the process of interviews at what stage their incompetence is revealed. Most of the candidates lose out in the communication stage itself. Is there a way to improve? Yes! But how? Read on!

Communication depends on basic aspect that we all need to understand; that is the key. When we are questioned in English, our brain absorbs the input in English processes the input in our regional language or the first language (often referred to as Mother Tongue) and then prepares a response in regional language and then gives out a response in English. This is the basic principle as to how our brains work and respond.

The foolproof way to improve our communication and improve it would require to train our brain to think in English in all times of our thought processes. As in,  'I need to call Hazel to get an update.', 'I need to write an email to the recruitment HR to ask for an interview date.' Such thought processes must be built in English language and the same be done from dawn until dusk. This helps us to process inputs and deliver our communication outputs in English much quicker.

I recently happened to interview a profile for a technical process. Although her knowledge was good, I had to reject her profile from further process as she literally was translating her regional language and her sentence was a grammatical horror. When I asked her, "Tell me some of the value additions you've contributed to your current role", she replied, "That and all no time is there." I was shocked to hear such a statement which is a word to word translation from a regional language. Now in order to avoid such a folly and be able to present oneself better, one needs to think in English.
